The deputy mayor of St. John’s is walking away from the NDP – at least for this election.
Sheilagh O’Leary had intended to seek the party nod in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, but sitting MHA Lorraine Michael, a former leader, had intended to seek re-election.
That would have meant a run-off for the nomination, but things changed yesterday when leader Alison Coffin announced that she is going for the seat in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi and that Michael is retiring.
O’Leary lives in the district, and has no intentions of running in St. John’s Centre, the district currently held by outgoing NDP MHA Gerry Rogers.
She says St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi is her home and where she was raised.
