  • VIDEO Overnight Paving Underway, But Drivers Attempt to Plow Through

The minister of transportation included VOCM News on a recent tour of overnight paving work underway on the Trans Canada Highway, just outside St. John’s.

Steve Crocker was dismayed to find several drivers helping themselves to an all-access cruise through the detoured area during last night’s inside look. He says people who ignore the temporary changes, may face legal action.

The overnight paving shift currently set up between the Holyrood Access Road and the Foxtrap Access Road is helping ease traffic woes, however there’s a new concern now that the workplace is in darkness. Head-to-toe fluorescent clothing is mandatory for all workers on site to heighten visibility.

All traffic has been detoured to Peacekeepers Way and the Conception Bay Highway.

In the span of one hour last night, at least three vehicles entered the restricted area. One driver who was stopped in the zone blamed her presence on accidentally following a truck into the site.

Minister Crocker wants drivers to be aware of the detour as it’s against the law to disobey signage. Crocker says it’s clearly marked, and there is a flag person at the entrance of the detour who is there to assist.

He reminds motorists that it’s an active construction zone and safety is of the utmost importance. He says transportation and works employees recorded the license plates and they will be notifying authorities.
