The head of the Geography Department at Memorial University says news that carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere has permanently surpassed 400 parts per million means an increase in climate warming.
In September, for the first time ever in the Northern Hemisphere, the carbon dioxide has stayed at that level. Dr. Norm Catto says the high number, while specifically more of a symbolic number, still has meaning. He says without changing carbon dioxide output, climate change will get more extreme. While there’s nothing magical about the number 400, it does mean climate change will continue to progress.
Catto says it’s possible to slow the rate of increase, but it will take decades to see the change.
He says people need to look at reducing carbon emissions so that eventually the numbers come back down.
