The Persistence Theatre Company will continue amplifying the voices of women this year.
The feminist theatre company had a blockbuster first season with Berni Stapleton’s play Offensive to Some. They announced the beginning of their second season today.
As part of the company’s mission, all of their plays have dialogue spoken by women a minimum of 50 per cent of the time, a level of representation which Artistic Director Jenn Deon says isn’t as common as you might think.
Deon says of the top 100 publicly traded companies in the country, only 10 per cent of execs are women. Even in theatre, which you think would be quite progressive, women make up over half of the play writing union, but only 25 per cent of plays being produced are written by women.
Tonight at the Ship in St. John’s Berni Stapleton will host the Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda open mic night.
Jenn Deon and Board Chair Jean Graham were in studio on the VOCM Morning Show this morning and spoke about the upcoming season and Persistence’s mission with VOCM’s Paddy Daly.
