Residents throughout the Placentia area will welcome home a local athlete who recently made a mark in world competition.
Peter Hynes was the only Newfoundlander on Team Canada to participate in the recent Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.
He’s coming home today with a bronze medal in Javelin.
Gord Pike is the Manager of Recreation and Community Programs with the town of Placentia and is the Program Coordinator with Special Olympics in the region. He says Hynes has come a long way since getting involved in Special Olympics.
Peter qualified for the Canada Games last summer, then qualified for the National Games and was the only Newfoundlander to qualify for the World Games.
A motorcade will greet Peter and his family as they arrive back in Placentia this afternoon at 5:00 followed by a rally in the town square.
Congratulations to @PlacentiaSO Athlete, Peter Hynes, on his bronze medal in the M01 Mini Javelin event at the 2019 #SpecialOlympicsWorldGames in Abu Dhabi, UAE this weekend. Proudly representing Team Canada Athletics Team! #GoTeamCanada #GovNL
