If you’re planning on hitting the road over the May 24th long weekend, be prepared for an increased police presence.
Constable Jolene Garland of the RCMP says they want people to think about having fun and enjoying themselves, but doing it in a safe and legal way.
Garland says with increased numbers travelling the highways this weekend, there will be a heavier police presence all across the province.
She says they’ll be looking for impaired driving and basic safety infractions on the highways and on off-roads as well.
RCMP Auxiliary members on the Avalon Peninsula will also be conducting cabin patrols with educational brochures to give to people on recreational vehicle use with safety tips.
She says while commuting on roadways, avoid distracted driving by staying off your cell phones, adhere to the speed limits and be mindful of increased traffic by giving yourself a safe travelling distance, and adjusting to the weather and traffic levels.
