  • Police Seize Weapons, Drugs, Over $840k in Cash in Project Broken

The RCMP have made the province’s largest seizure of illicit cash as part of a large investigation into organized crime.

Project Broken began in May 2017 as an investigation into the illicit activities of a number of individuals from the Torbay area.

By March of this year, police were carrying out multiple search warrants in the investigation. Today, the RCMP showed for the media exactly what they found.

    • Over $840,000 cash.
    • six kilos of cocaine
    • three firearms including a 9mm handgun
    • five vehicles, including a hummer and a Mercedes Benz
    • 16 doses of LSD
    • jewelry, clothing and other items believed to have been purchased through the proceeds of crime

The RCMP says the total value of all goods seized, including cash, is about $1.4-million.

Police have arrested 27-year-old Jonathan Brandon Mahon of St. John’s, 29-year-old Nicklaus James Travis of Torbay, and 30-year-old Thomas Scott Brown of Torbay.

The investigation also led police outside the province, and included the help of other police organizations. As a result charges have also been laid against 29-year-old Charlotte Louise Toomey of Ontario, and 28-year-old Michael Douglas Smith, currently incarcerated at Drummondville Penitentiary.

The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
