  • Port aux Basques Residents Hunker Down as Area Battered by Storm

Residents of Port aux Basques are hunkering down as a vicious winter storm pummels the area.

Winds gusting in excess of 130 km/h have knocked out power to some parts of town, while Marine Atlantic has cancelled crossings for the day.

Mayor John Spencer says some residents in the Channel area have been without power since yesterday.

Newfoundland Power has extra crews working in extreme conditions to try to restore power. He says as soon as power is restored, it gets knocked out again because of the high winds, salt on the wires and arcing.

The town attempted to set up a warming centre for those without power, but even that was difficult because of the the extreme conditions.

He says they arranged some space and a local grocer donated soup and sandwiches, but the power went. They then shifted to another location, but the generator was inoperable. She says neighbours are reaching out to neighbours to make sure everyone is safe.
