  • Increased Focus on Wind Energy at Annual Meeting, says Premier

Premier Dwight Ball was in Boston yesterday promoting Muskrat Falls at the annual meeting of eastern Premiers and New England Governors. But the Premier says hydroelectricity was not the primary topic of discussion during the meetings.

Premier Ball said the emphasis now is getting the hydro electric project completed. At the closing news conference he said “Our concern right now is to finish this project, get it on schedule, and to get it on budget, as best we can.”

While that’s this province’s biggest concern, for the other premiers and governors the topic has shifted to wind energy. Premier Ball says for governors in the New Englands states hydro is seen as the building block towards expanding wind energy potential.

He says they discussed wind energy opportunities in this province. He says wind is becoming the major focus for the north eastern United States.

Last year, the leaders committed to lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 35 to 45 per cent of 1990 levels by 2030 and upwards of 85 per cent by 2050. The leaders wrapped up their annual meeting saying talks will continue on energy and climate change.
