Grieg is planning a celebration today in Marystown to mark the official start-up of operations after the company got the environmental green light for its proposed salmon hatchery and fish farm in Placentia Bay, centred in Marystown.
Company, municipal and government officials are applauding the next steps, but salmon conservation groups are less than enthusiastic.
Yesterday, the Atlantic Salmon Federation announced that it would be appealing government’s decision to accept Grieg’s Environmental Impact Statement, claiming it sets a precedent for environmental assessment in Canada.
Today’s celebration will include officials from Grieg, processor OCI, Premier Dwight Ball and Minister Gerry Byrne. It will take place at noon at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre.
