  • Province Bringing in ‘Revenge Porn’ Legislation

Newfoundland and Labrador is about to introduce specific legislation which will make it tougher on people who share or threaten to share intimate images of partners and former partners.

Justice Minister Andrew Parsons says having specific legislation will lessen the burden of proof from that which now exists under the Criminal Code.

Minister Parsons says such activity can have profound effects on people, so there will be significant financial and other penalties. As well, the courts will have the power to order the images removed or taken down.

The victim won’t have to prove damages as just sharing the image will be the proof of damage.

Parsons says not all cases are “revenge porn” where someone is either getting back at a former partner or attempting to force someone to stay in a relationship by threatening to share. Even with no evil intent, sharing intimate images of others will be against the law.
