The idea of a province-wide ban on plastic bags is picking up steam.
St John’s City Council unanimously agreed to write a letter to the Provincial Government in support of banning the single use of plastic bags after the motion was raised by Councillor Sheilagh O’Leary. Corner Brook City Councillor, Keith Cormier put forward a similar motion on September 19 which will be voted on during their October 3 meeting.
Representatives with the municipality of Gander says the issue has been raised in committee meetings and will go before council on this afternoon. Councillors will not comment until the matter is raised publicly.
Meanwhile, St John’s residents had this to say about a potential ban.
People say that the bags create a lot of unnecessary litter. One woman says she would be in full support of a ban and another gentleman says he would not be on board with a ban and doesn’t see a big deal in using plastic.
