A controversy surrounding a recent presentation at the school in Middle Arm on the Baie Verte Peninsula appears to have exposed divisions in the province.
Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
Those divisions became apparent on VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly yesterday.
The presentation, by Get Real, a group that is traveling the country spreading the message of inclusion and diversity, was poorly attended. Some parents raised concerns about what they felt was government interference in imposing values they didn’t share.
While others feel opposition to the presentation was based on the very homophobic attitudes Get Real is hoping to address.
Marley Bowen, who is originally from the west coast, but now lives in Toronto is back in the province with the Get Real program. She says it teaches students about the understanding and acceptance.
She says what happened this week proves there’s still a long way to go.
