    Cormier and Bruce Lead 2017 Royal LePage Provincial Junior Championships

    Frenchman’s Cove, NL….Under overcast but warm conditions and despite heavy rains overnight, players were treated to ideal course conditions during the first day of competition at the 2017 Royal LePage Provincial Junior Championships at the Grande Meadows Golf Course in Frenchman’s Cove on the Burin Peninsula.

    In the Girls Junior Division, Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club recorded an 88 to hold a 5 stroke lead over 2016 Juvenile Champion Paige Hickey. Megan Colbourne also from Blomidon Golf Club rounds out the top three, carding a 105 and 17 strokes off the pace heading into day 2 of competition.

    In the Junior Boys Division, 2016 runner-up Andrew Bruce of Humber Valley Resort recorded a 1 over par 73 to hold a 2 stroke lead over Michael Simms of Clovelly. Blomidon Golf Club member Matthew Bonnell holds down third position with a 5 over par 77 to put him four strokes from the leader.

    In the Boys Juvenile Division, Simms carded a 75 and has a 3 stroke lead over Ethan Efford of Clovelly. Last year’s Bantam Division winner Alex Dolomount of Bally Haly Country Club is tied for third with two other competitors including fellow club member Patrick Rice and Nathan Young of Clovelly with scores of 84 and 6 strokes behind Efford.

    Efford holds the lead in the Bantam Division by 6 strokes over Nathan Young with Joseph Cluney of Blomidon Golf Club rounds out the top three in the Division recording a first round total of 95.

    Round 2 is set for Tuesday morning beginning at 9:00

    Eastern Canadian Rugby Championship Tournament – July 7, 8 and 9th in St. John’s.
    :

    The Newfoundland & Labrador Rugby Union will host the Eastern
    Canadian Rugby Championship Tournament, with both male and female divisions at the
    under 16 and under 18 ages, over the July 7, 8 and 9th 2017 weekend. Planning and
    preparation is on track with all matches to be held at the Swilers Rugby Park in St. John s.
    Newfoundland Rugby has a proud history of staging well organized, competitive and fun
    events, and we are proud to host and will deliver and first-class festival on and off the pitch.
    The tournament is not only a great opportunity for players and teams to compete against
    each other in the Atlantic region but also a wonderful opportunity for teams, families,
    friends and fans to visit and take in not only the games and festivities but the abundant
    history and culture in the oldest city in North America. The Newfoundland Rugby
    community is small in comparison to many but has produced many talented players
    making it to National and International squads.
