  • VIDEO Putting to Focus on Victims and Survivors: More Calls for Restorative Justice in NL

A support specialist with the Coalition Against the Sexual Exploitation of Youth believes the principles of Restorative Justice can work in the Provincial Justice System.

Close to 150 people attended a panel discussion at Memorial University last night. The event brought together several stakeholders of the justice system in this province, and Nova Scotia, to talk about implementing restorative justice in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The relationship based format for dealing with conflict and deviance, is currently used in Nova Scotia when it comes to the education system. However, the neighboring province has a moratorium against using it for crimes involving power and domination or sexual and domestic violence.

Melendy Muise, who works with people who have experienced sexual violence and exploitation, is confident restorative justice can work in the province as long as the ‘survivor voice’ is valued by all participants.

Muise says it’s important to let those affected inform the process. She using says restorative justice for sexual or domestic violence doesn’t mean sitting across from the accused.
