The town of Roddickton-Bide Arm is calling on DFO to come up with a strategy to address the large number of seals that are trapped in the community.
The 40 or so seals came inshore a week ago, but the ice in the inlet froze in behind them, blocking their access to the salt water and forcing them onto the land.
Mayor Sheila Fitzgerald says the town held a meeting last night and are formally asking DFO to come up with a plan.
She says two of the animals were struck by vehicles last night.
DFO has indicated the seals will move on on their own, but Fitzgerald says the nearest open ocean is a good 5 miles over the ice, it’s been over a week, and she’s concerned the problem will only get worse as the seals weaken.
She says DFO will respond when a whale or dolphin gets trapped in a net, this situation she suggests, is no different.
Meanwhile, DFO says it has officers heading to the area to assess the situation and see what, if anything, can be done.
