Ice-coated vehicles, roads and walkways are the order of the day as the eastern half of the island wakes up to a heavy dose of freezing rain.

Schools on the Avalon, including those in metro, are delaying their opening by two hours because of the freezing rain.

Schools on the Burin Peninsula, eastern Newfoundland, central and the Avalon are also delaying the morning bell. You can find updates on the VOCM Storm Watch page.

There are delays and cancellations at St. John’s International. Newfoundland Power is dealing with an outage in the Power’s Pond area of Mount Pearl and should have the lights and heat back on by 9:30 this morning. There’s also an outage in St. Andrews on the west coast.

The Department of Transportation and Works says it worked overnight in some areas to prepare for icy conditions this morning.

PAL Airlines and Aerospace meteorologist Brian Walsh says temperatures will warm up today, but not before another few hours of freezing rain. The changeover will happen by 10:00 am on the Avalon but not until about noon in the Clarenville area.
