  • Seabird Poop May Be Fighting Global Warming: Audubon Society

Newfoundland and Labrador seabirds could be playing an interesting and unexpected role in keeping polar temperatures cool.

The Audubon Society has published an article outlining research in Nature Communications about the role ammonia in seabird poop plays in creating low-lying clouds that reflect sunlight and keep Arctic waters cool.

According to the article, researchers found what is being called “strong evidence” that ammonia bursts in the Arctic were tied to tens of millions of seabirds that migrate north in the summer.

The researchers caution however that the effects are not nearly enough to counter the results of climate change, but they are gaining a better understanding of the relationship between seabirds and the atmosphere.
