Seven snowmobilers were rescued on the weekend in separate searches which involved helicopters, ground crews, police and others.
Port Saunders RCMP got a call Saturday at about 6:00 p.m. from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax that a personal location beacon had been activated by a party of five snowmobilers on the Long Range Mountains near Harbour Deep on the Northern Peninsula.
The five ran into high winds and blizzard-like conditions while en route to Harbour Deep.
A helicopter from 103 Squadron in Gander was dispatched along with the Long Range Mountains Search and Rescue from Roddickton. A Cormorant found the snowmobilers about six hours later. All were in good health.
During that effort, a second search was activated when RCMP became aware of two other stranded snowmobilers. A search involving many of the same resources found the two early in the morning. They were okay, despite spending the night in the woods.
