VOCM Cares and Coleman’s are teaming up this Saturday for a food drive in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
VOCM Cares has organized the Share to Care Food Drive at two Coleman’s locations in the metro region.
Coleman’s Media Relations and Event Planner, Judy Bennett says they have been a proud supporter of the Community Food Sharing Association, and when VOCM Cares reached out to with an idea, they didn’t hesitate to get involved.
Coleman’s is also donating $10,000 to the Association to kickstart the event.
The two locations for the food drive are on Centennial Drive in Mount Pearl and the other on Newfoundland Drive in St. John’s from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
They are accepting both food and cash donations.
Province Opens Doors to New Warehouse Space for Food
Meanwhile the Community Food Sharing Association may have secured new warehouse space thanks to an offer from government.
Executive Director Eg Walters was offered use of the old Eastern Health kitchen facility in Pippy Place by Premier Dwight Ball yesterday after a meeting outside the burned out facility on Topsail Road yesterday.
The provincial government is also contributing $50,000 to the Community Food Sharing Association. The premier says it was the right thing to do given the work the association does.
Walters toured the new site yesterday and says it will meet their needs. It has loading bays, large rooms for storage and room to operate a fork lift.
A lease is being drawn up and Walters is hopeful it will meet their expectations. He hopes they can resume distributing food again next week.
He says with all the donations coming in and the VOCM Cares Share to Care Food Drive this Saturday at Coleman’s Newfoundland Drive and Mount Pearl locations, they’re hoping to start accepting food and distributing it to food banks as early as Monday or Tuesday.
