The small community of Smith’s Harbour on the Baie Verte Peninsula is making a name for itself with some colourful and creative garbage cans.
Gail Foster is a local community volunteer who came up with the idea to paint garbage cans after a friend of hers in nearby Westport painted a garbage can to look like a tin of Carnation Evaporated Milk.
She says she brought the idea home with her and decided to expand on it through a local student project and a job creation program with local workers.
She says they now have 12 garbage cans distributed around the community adorned with product logos many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will recognize.
The cans including Carnation, Eversweet, Purity Hard Bread, Good Luck Margarine, Keep Kool soft drink, Suncrest Orange and Pepsi.
Foster says she’s amazed how the idea has taken off and she’s getting requests from all over the province.
She says it could become a fundraiser for their local recreation committee next year they’re getting such a positive response.
