  • St. John’s Airport Unveils Newly Expanded Departures Area, Renovations

St. John’s International Airport has almost doubled in size with the unveiling of phase one of its expansion project.

Phase one of the project focused on the departures area, greatly expanding the security area to accommodate the increased traffic as well as post-9/11 demands.

The airport says the existing terminal building was designed to accommodate an average annual capacity of 900,000 passengers. However, since it opened in 2002, annual passenger volume has exceeded 1.5-million passengers.

As well, the departures lounge has doubled its square footage, adding new seating with power outlets, a full YellowBelly restaurant, a Newfoundland Chocolate Company Store and other features in addition to the new gates.

If you’re heading to the airport in the near future you’re going to notice things have shifted around a little, with security now on the right side of the main floor.

The newly renovated areas of the airport open tomorrow.
