  • Start to Summer Could Warm Up After Chilly Start to June

Residents on the Avalon and in other areas of the island have held off on a lot of regular spring activities this year because of less than comfortable weather conditions.

After-supper walks, flower planting and outside painting have been delayed for a host of weather related reasons.

PAL Airlines and Aerospace meteorologist Brian Walsh is backing up many observations about this year’s fall-like spring weather with some solid statistics today.

Walsh tweeted that as of today, St. John’s International Airport has only reported two 20°C days so far this year, and both were back in April.

According to Walsh, the last 12 days of April had an average high of 12.4°C which is 6° Celsius above normal.

However, the first 12 days of the supposedly warmer month of June, had an average high of 9.2° Celsius, that’s 6°C below normal.

Walsh also says the long-range models indicate that things could start warming up beginning Tuesday, as we approach the change of seasons.

Summer officially begins next week on Thursday, June 21.
