The latest models from the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax show Hurricane Chris weakening to a post-tropical storm and tracking across the Avalon Peninsula early Friday morning.

The provincial department of Municipal Affairs and Environment is monitoring the latest forecasts and warns that high winds and heavy rainfall is anticipated along with high waves in coastal areas.

Residents are being encouraged to prepare and maintain an emergency kit and be ready to cope on their own for at least 72 hours.

A tropical cyclone statement has been issued by Environment Canada.
