  • Student Coding, Technology Initiatives Receive Provincial Funding

The provincial government has announced funding for two separate initiatives to expose more students to computer coding and technology.

The Department of Industry and Innovation is providing $250,000 to support a partnership between government and Brilliant Labs to provide students with hands-on participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics focused activities. (STEM)

Meanwhile, the Department of Education is providing $150,000 for resources and two itinerant teaching positions to support the work of Brilliant Labs—an Atlantic Canadian organization that supports coding, computational thinking and Maker Education.

Brilliant Labs provides educational technologies like interface equipment, sensors, programming languages and 3D printing.

James Flynn, the founder of Code NL, says placing greater emphasis will mean more lucrative career prospects for our graduates as occupations related to computing comprise two-thirds of all new jobs.
