  • Students Showcase Scientific Knowledge at Science and Technology Fair

Students from across eastern Newfoundland gathered at Holy Heart high school in St. John’s yesterday for a science and technology fair.

About 150 students, from grades seven to 12, packed into the school gymnasium to show off their finished projects, and to compete for a spot at the national competition in New Brunswick this May.

Yvonne Dawe, of the Eastern Newfoundland Science Fairs Council, says the projects fall into one of two categories, either life sciences or physical sciences.

She says the students got very creative with their projects. For example, one student did an agricultural project about wire worms in potatoes and how to get rid of them in an environmentally friendly way.

Dawe says competing in the science fair has a lot of benefits for students. She says the students get to investigate areas of science that they find interesting. She encourages students from across the eastern region to participate in next year’s event.
