The Canadian Coast Guard says ice conditions in the Strait of Belle Isle are the worst they’ve seen in 30 years.
Sea ice has been wreaking havoc on travel in the area, causing significant delays.
Ice conditions are so severe they are preventing ice-breaking operations. The Coast Guard vessel Molly Kool was recently stuck in ice due to the extreme pressure—that vessel has 18,000 horsepower.
Temporary arrangements have been made to deliver essential food and supplies to communities in Labrador by air from St. Anthony and by tractor trailer from Lab West.
Flights are available from both St. Anthony and Blanc Sablon.
The provincial government says it understands the frustration of ferry users who need to cross the Strait of Belle Isle. Crossings will resume when it’s safe to to do so.
