The Carbonear man accused of killing his five-year-old daughter last year appeared in court in Harbour Grace this morning for his preliminary hearing. VOCM’s Gerri Lynn Mackey reports.
The courtroom was at capacity as Butt appeared in person for the first time since being charged. Butt is facing charges of first degree murder and arson in connection with the death of his 5-year-old daughter Quinn after a fire at his Carbonear home last April.
Quinn’s mother, Andrea Gosse stood outside as Butt was escorted into the building. She was surrounded by a group of supporters who stayed silent as he was escorted from the police vehicle to the courtroom. They held pink banners and framed pictures of Quinn.
Melissa Butt, a friend of Quinn’s mother Andrea, was among those gathered outside the courthouse this morning. She says this is a difficult time for Quinn’s family.
Gosse refrained from attending the preliminary hearing which is under a publication ban. Increased security has been put in place for the ten day hearing.
