After over two decades under a moratorium, the province is preparing for an eventual return to the cod fishery.
Provincial Fisheries Minister Steve Crocker has announced over $1.8 million dollars in funding through the Seafood Innovation and Transition program.
The money will be used for research and development to help diversify the local economy and transition the province back towards a groundfish-based seafood industry.
The projects include work on improvements to feeding ranched cod, work to develop dry fish products, and development of a new cod pot design.
Crocker made the announcement this morning at the Aquaculture Canada Cold Harvest conference underway in St. John's.
