There’s been another fatal accident on the Veterans Memorial Highway, the second in just under a month.
A 42-year-old Bay Roberts woman passed away after the vehicle she was driving was involved in a three vehicle collision on the highway about a quarter of a kilometre south of the North River turnoff.
Two other people were taken to hospital for relatively minor injuries.
RCMP are investigating the cause of the head-on collision.
Just last month, three people lost their lives in a head-on collision on the Veteran’s Memorial between Roaches Line and Mackinsons.
That accident led to renewed calls for passing lanes on the busy highway, and the launch of an online petition.
At that time the Department of Transportation announced that it had conducted a traffic count on the Veteran’s Memorial Highway that showed daily traffic volumes of betwen 6,000 and 9,000 vehicles a day.
The data also showed that most excessive speeding took place between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. Data recorded at the time showed that speeds were consistently over 120 km/h, and in some cases as high as 150 km/h.
The department indicated it was analyzing the data while Minister Steve Crocker announced that he would be updating the Conception Bay North joint council on the data and would be reaching out to RCMP in Trinity Conception for their input.
