Leakage of a fuel-type product present for a while but noticeable only this week has resulted in the closure of the playground at Virginia Park.
The Department of Transportation and Works says some grease from a highways vehicle parked at the depot migrated to the Virginia Park Community Centre and playground over the winter.
Government says an environmental scientist assessed the area and recommended taping it off and cleaning it up with absorbent materials.
Wallace Gregory, the executive director of the Virginia Park Community Centre, says the area was taped off to assess and remediate.
He says they noticed an oil slick on Monday near the parking lot.
Gregory says the basketball court is closed for the time being. The children are using the Kenny Myers field in the interim.
The department will assess drainage issues in the area over the summer.
