Wabana Mayor Gary Gosine is applauding the efforts of volunteers in helping to save five white beaked dolphins from being crushed by ice near Lance Cove on Bell Island.
Volunteers managed to move five of the dolphins to open water yesterday. Sadly, a number of dolphins perished in the ice, and another died while being transported.
He says unfortunately four were crushed in the ice.
Gosine says the volunteers went to extraordinary lengths to save the creatures.
He says each animal was put in a sling, or tarp, carried to a pickup and then driven to the open water area.
