The Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce is raising the alarm about a huge increase in tipping fees set by Western Regional Waste Management.
Chamber President David Walsh says they believe the increase is to pay for shipping garbage hundreds of kilometres to Norris Arm in Central Newfoundland.
Walsh says tipping fees in his region have increased from $75 per tonne, to $164 per tonne.
He says that’s far beyond what residents of the Avalon Peninsula are paying for the service. He asserts it’s a question of fairness.
He says the tipping fee on the Avalon is $68 a tonne, which is a “huge discrepancy.”
