Flood warnings for Muke Lake and Mud Lake Road in Happy Valley-Goose Bay have been lifted as water levels on the Lower Churchill river continue to drop.
The provincial government issued a flood warning yesterday for the Mud Lake Road and surrounding area after the ice started to break up on the Churchill River and water levels started to rise.
Awareness of water levels is heightening in the wake of flash flooding on the Churchill River two years ago that caused widespread damage and forced the evacuation of Mud Lake and parts of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Area MHA Perry Trimper says things are looking much better, but they are keeping a close eye on the situation.
He says they had more than six metres of snowfall over the winter and were hoping for a slow, gradual thaw. While there was a slow increase in water levels late last week, the levels have dropped several inches today. He says they’re continuing to watch the situation very closely.
