Cental Gal :

What happened to all of those CAMERAS that were installed on George Street. Shouldn't they at least catch one culpret with our tax-payers dollars that paid for those bloody cameras????

Ban it :

why don't they just ban bear spray all together here doesn't make any sense to me. How often do you hear of a bear attack here in NL. No a big solution to me.

Wrist Slaps :

People are going to continue to break the law on George and elsewhere as long as the justice system stays the way it is. People are getting nothing more than slaps on the wrist and are then sent on their merry way to commit more crimes. How many times have you seen a story on this site where the accused in a crime has a lengthy criminal record, or they're charged with several breaches of probation? There are no real consequences to their actions, and as long as that's the case, we'll see more and more incidents like this.

Bars are Not to Blame :

I've been to George a time or two and yes I have seen things that shouldn't be going on but why take the blame out on the bars. It's the people who cause the trouble that should be blamed. The people who own the bars are making a living for themselves like every other doctor, lawyer, accountant etc. in this town. Shutting down the bars is taking their livihood away from them not to mention the hundreds of people working there to support themselves. I agree that the police need to make more rounds to the area. I also think that if they did make more rounds then people would feel safer going there for a few drinks on a Friday or Saturday night.

SillySpray :

Bear spray is a major problem lately. How stupid is it to sell cans upon cans of this stuff to young people when the avalon doesn't even have bears.. Get a clue whoever sells this stuff!!

Maureen :

I for one would not go on George Street even if i was paid to go down there. It has turned out to be a place for druggies, drunks and morons who are shit disturbers. They need to be caught and sent away to boot camp to make them in to men, the ones in charge there would whip them in to respect people and teach them some manners etc etc.Seeing we do not have that here then its time for the judges to give these lousy low life criminals the maximum time they can give them in jail, then they will have alot of time to think about all the wrong they have done in their lives and when they finally get out they wont be so stupid to do anything bad again and finally turn their lives around for the better.

Al :

George Street is a nice area with lots of cold beer and good looking ladies. If there was only a way to keep out the trouble-makers then everything would be fine. What kind of a lout goes down there with bear spray? Can't they just go down there and enjoy a few cold beers sensibly?

Wut :

"Close it down" he says... Wow really? Yeah lets not try to fix the problems, lets just move it somewhere else.. Its only a small amount of people that actually cause any problems, why should everyone suffer because of a couple morons who cause trouble? Its no different than going anywhere else, theres always a chance something could happen. Thats a risk you take when going down there. If you choose to stay out of it then thats cool, but mind your own business if it has no impact on you personally.

That being said I really hope they catch who did it. Theres no need for stuff like that... at all...

Sensible :

To all the old fogeys calling for the closure of George Street, get real. People know what they are getting into when they go downtown, that's their choice. People trying to protect others from themselves is despicable and runs counter to everything a free society stands for. Stop with the reactionary babble and actually think for a change.

Derek :

As a cab driver who has to work that area to make a living, it's time that judges stopped slapping people on the wrist.... and giving them the proper kick in the arse they so desperately need.

I worked george fo 20 years and the most i seen were fist fights i dont blame this on the bars open late i blame it on the lack of policing there should be foot patrol cops there after 11pm and keep those punks in line .

Attn: Got it gone :

I don't know about you, but I would much rather be sprayed with some relatively harmless (yes it's painful, but not deadly) bear spray than stabbed/hit with a beer bottle, broken or otherwise.

Any street with a high concentration of drinking establishments will encounter some violence. Yes, over the years George street has seen its share of fistfights, even a few stabbings. When you compare that to popular spots in other cities (downtown Halifax, Edmonton, etc.), George is a pretty safe place. That being said, it could always be better. I think the increased policing and installation of CCTV are a step in the right direction.

Townie :

How many places promote a booze street full of drunkards as a tourism attraction. My uncle and his wife were visiting from the USA and almost got hit in the head by a flying beer bottle while walking on George Street.

Jimbov :

George street is full of animals...don't see the problem here...

Newfie Bullet :

Nothing wrong with George Street almost every city has a similar area full of bars and night clubs. I think the street just needs to be better policed. In other cities alot of bars have metal detectors you must pass to enter a bar and so you should to eliminate knives and such.

Robert :

What part of the George Street scene is a tourist attraction? Perhaps a survey asking real tourists if/when they actually frequented the scene would answer the question.

Citizen :

Everyone raves about George Street but it's only a hangout for drunks, druggies and hoodlums. The bars are open too late and then fights break out when everyone is loaded drunk at 4:00am. Turn the street into a family oriented place.

Close it Down :

Really? Bear Spray on George Steet?
What is it going to take to get this- Too highly sought after street gone? Whenever you read about St.John's in tourism books, It will Always mention George St.
Close the street down, It's time, People will still visit and spend money in the city. Someone is going to be killed there soon, there are stabbings, major fights, It's becoming a regular thing down there. Will it take a murder, to get some action, and as for the cameras, they are obviously NOT doing the job. Close the street and save a life.
