What about the individual who is not able to get the flu shot due to reactions to it. I don't work with healthcare but I do work with public and my work does encourage us to get the flu shot. I am advised by my doctor not to get it due to reactions I had with it other times that I had it. I also wasn't able to get the H1N1 shot. I had to take a chance and i have to take a chance every year and hope I don't get sick. But when I get sicker after getting the shot my family doctor feels it is not safe for me to get it. So would I get docked pay as well cause I am not able to get the vaccine.

Janeway kid mom :
Please don't get confused here people-they ARE being given a choice THEY DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE NEEDLE. And they are being made well aware of the consequences of that should a flu outbreak happen. Seriously, if you don't believe in such things what are you doing working in health care in the first place?!?!? That's like an athiest catholic priest!!!

my wife had the flu shot last year and said she would never get it again and she is a healthcare worker

In no way should a worker be penalized for not wanting to have vaccines injected into their bodies each year. THIS IS A MATTER OF PERSONAL CHOICE!!

Sam :
Shouldn't receiving an injection be something left up to your own personal choice?

Retired union person :
I will be getting my flu shot again like I do every year, so it matters not but for all those employees who refuse and spread germs to people who can't for health reasons are being pretty self centered and should be ashamed of themselves. Are they afraid of a little needle? Workers who refuse should be noted and be made wear a mask the whole work shift and maybe have the cost of the masks taken out of their pay and not out of my tax dollars.

Healthcare gone to the dogs.. :
I hate you guys complaining about everything , when we the sick see you guys chatting up a storm when we are needing our health done..I think health care should never be unionized or they should get so much money, i think if you lower the wage most nurses would run away from here..But we would have people who care about us around...

HUH? :
Revamp the education piece? Aren't people well aware that germs can spread easily, and that washing your hands frequently can help stop that? What more can education do?

Ok...this is a no brainer...the constitution of Canada gives us freedom of rights to choose what one decides as regards to his/her own body. When anyone dictates/forces a "personal" choice it infringes on ones own right to choose...this is discrimination people...Central health would not have a leg to stand on with this one in court!!!

I feel it should be mandatory for all health care professionals to have this shot. Along with drug/alcohol screening every year.

Shoot this :
Do some research onm the flu shot. It is actually almost a complete waste of money and in fact is not good for you. By the time the flu shot is available it is for the most part ineffective in preventing the flu. Not to mention of the contamination over the last few years with cancer causing virus that led to recalls.
The best thing that the flu shots do is increase the ballance sheet of the drug manufacturer. Every year I used to get the flu shot I got sick shortly after, and later cought the flu anyway. other shots are good but the flu shot is idiotic.

BK :
IF union members are opposed to the flu shots they should be leading a campaign to eliminate the program , instead of making a living from it. Hypocrits!! It's time as well that we stpped wasting taxpayers money having doctors adminisitering these shots. As SARS clinics showed, doctors aren't required. Other staff can handle the needles quite well.

Hands off :
No employer should have any say over an employee's body. This hospital board is showing contempt for it's employees & that's what it's about not the health of patients. I had a flu shot a couple of years ago & guess what? I got a nasty flu & had to be hospitalized. It happens anyway. The actions of these "heatlh boards" is downright frightening. They're behaving like dictators!

Any concern for patients here? I do think a great number of nurses are more concerned with days off and pensions than patient care.

Have not taken a flu shot for 7 years now and I am not planning to take one . Everytime I had shot I had a problem after. They got their rights not to take a shot.

What does Carol want? If you work in health care, set an example to the rest of society and get the damm shoot. It might mean the difference between an outbreak or not. If I were at a hospital and notice some one was caring for my loved one sick as a dog, I would want that person sent home, and if the person was to lazy or stupid to get a flu shoot than YES he/she should not get paid. If I go to work and I do not have the proper equipment than I get sent home on my dime not the company's.

Flu Bug :
I think it's ridiculous. Not all healthcare workers have direct patient contact. Some of us work in offices that never see a patient in the run of the whole day. Why should I get a flu shot and put that garbage into my body just because some one says I should. That in itself would make me not take it for sure.

People should not be forced to do anything they don't want to. Especially something that could be potentially harmful.

Civil servants are not government owned :
This blows my mind! The flu shot has been controversy for years and should be an individuals' right. I hope all Unions get in line with this. I am sick to death of government thinking they own us when we are on their payroll. Social Services recipients are also on your payroll. It may serve you well to start dictating to them a little more and showing more respect for the people that actually work for you. This government has no RESPECT for anyone.

RNIAM :
I am a front line worker.I will not be getting a flu shot.I have very low sick leave usage. If I indeed get the flu and they dock my pay. There will be a grievance filed and it will go to court. This is a human rights issue as well. What are we living in,a dictatorship? If all workers refuse the needle, what will the management do than? Send us all home .What a joke!

Jocko on the rocko :
"especially one as controversial as the flu shot which has known dangers, they should not be penalized." I can't believe the ignorance surrounding the flu shot. Million upon millions are given out each year and yes there are a few side effects for some and I have never heard of anyone dieing from it. Overall it saves lives. I guess some would rather have a pandemic or have elderly people subjected to the Flu virus and die. If you are working in a Health Care facility, don't have the flu shot, the flu breaks out and you get it I think it's your responsibility to not spread it around. It should be mandatory. Another thing People saying they get the flu from the shot is utter nonsense. Ask any doctor and he will tell you the difference but then again to many people would rather believe the crap they read on the internet than their Doctor. It takes a few weeks for your body to build immunity after the shot so you are still susceptible to the flu. You may have had the flu before the shot. A lot of people confuse the flu with the common cold. In the end any risk far outweigh the conseuqences of not having the shot. To many people are spreading around a dangerous virus due to pure ignorance. Lets hope that no one dies from your ignorance. Giving someone else the flu may mean death for them. In my case I have a comprimised immune system and if you are a health care worker who is to ignorant to have a flu shot then I feel you should be forced to stay home without pay.

They are front line workers in health care. If they get sick, who will take care of the really sick. And besides that, what the heck are they afraid of?

Defend your Rights :
we need tostand up to this, no employer or government has the right to force me to accept anything into my body. This is a right I believe is worth defending with absolute conviction. Good news is that policy like this is starting to be defeated in the courts. Check out this article in Ontario. Janeway kid mom :
Sounds good to me!!! The last thing that we need is people working in a hospital and getting sick and then spreading it around to the other people in there too. Seriously, if you work in health care then you should be smart enough to get the shot. Even if it's not for yourself do it for the people that you might come across who don't need it. And if you don't believe in getting the shot then do spend some time in the Janeway PICU when they have 3 or 4 kids on ventilators seriously fighting for their lives because someone didn't want to get their flu shot because they are uneducated about the benefits of getting it and instead they spread it to others!!!

I work in Alberta and have to take a drug test every month...i don't have a choice. Its just a way to protect all workers. Same as this flu shot...these people work in environments where colds and flus are high risks. Why shouldn't they be required to take the flu shot...its not alot to ask!

Ed Samson :
Nothing to do with human rights or freedom, it's simply "a condition of employment". When I go to a hospital or medical institution for service I want to know that every posible precaution has been taken to protect me, that includes all staff having the flu shot and whatever else is available. Do these health care workers feel the same way about vacination for international travel? Bet most don't when they are getting ready to trot around the world on vacation, made possible by their good paying jobs. By the way people should not be allow to post comments here without posting their real name. If it's worth saying it's worth owning.

Health Care Worker :
All health care workers in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. should have the flu shot and be proud to say they did. The union is way behind on this one.

Are we in a free country or not? Wow that is harsh. If someone does not want to take a drug into their body, especially one as controversial as the flu shot which has known dangers, they should not be penalized. I'm afraid I would have to take no pay unfortunately. Money is no good when u r dead from all this crap.

Doesn't matter :
You took your time complaining about it. The staff at Central complained to the union a week ago. Had to wait to see what the nurses would say, did ya? What a waste of union dues($24 a Pay) you guys are. I usually have the flu shot, I may not this year. Not because I don't necessarily believe in it, but in the way it's being shoved down my throat.
