RNC Chief Joe Boland says there was no violence during an incident that led to the arrest of RNC Cst. Steve Curnew of the Criminal Investigation Division.
Curnew was arrested and charged overnight for allegedly failing to comply with an Emergency Protection Order.
The 43-year-old Steve Curnew was taken into custody overnight. The charge is dated today, but the offence is alleged to have occurred yesterday.
According the charge, the RNC officer failed to comply with conditions under the Family Violence and Protection Act. The charge says he was ordered to stay away from the applicant, including any residence, property, business, school or place of employment.
Curnew was in the holding cells in Provincial Court this morning, but when his matter was called in the courtroom, lawyer Jon Noonan indicated his client did not need to be present. Instead, Noonan appeared on his behalf.
RNC Chief Boland says Curnew was not on duty at the time of the alleged breach, and is currently non-operational and on leave. There are no details as to why the officer is off work. Boland says because this was a breach of the Family Violence and Protection Act and no criminal charges have been laid, no further details are available.
Curnew is the former Media Relations Officer with the Constabulary, and most recently served with the Criminal Investigation Division.
He was released from custody on a recognizance pending his next court date on September 6.
