A conference on women’s leadership in St. John’s yesterday is being hailed largely as a success, despite a controversial session that’s drawn a lot of criticism online.

Part of the agenda for the event was talking about women’s networking.
The man who facilitated that conversation based the talk around the works of Dale Carnegie, who died in 1955.
Mary Shortall, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, says a lot of the people in attendance found the advice given, including to smile more and deal with worrying by praying, not be relevant to what they’re going through today.
What I learned today at the Women’s Leadership Event. So many brilliant, high achieving women in this room. They don’t need this lesson. #nlpoli pic.twitter.com/vYE7tmqtzk

@PremierofNL with respect… from what I am hearing and reading, you and the organizers owe an apology to the women at the leadership conference. I am not there but look at this stuff… it’s antiquated, embarrassing and insulting. #NLpoli pic.twitter.com/fD26UoAq3g

She says the reaction sent a message to government that women already know how to network, and that they were doing a pretty good job of it already at the convention.
Overall, however, Shortall says the convention was a positive experience. She believes yesterday’s convention was a very important day.
