A small Newfoundland team put in a respectable showing – coming home with five medals from one of North America’s largest karate tournaments.
Six participants, representing Michael Foley’s Academy of Martial Arts in St. John’s attended the Quebec Open at Laval University in Quebec City on the weekend.
The team consisted of 18-year-old black belt Alex Hiscock, and five novice athletes – all 10 and younger.
Hiscock won two medals; gold in continuous fighting, and bronze in point fighting.
Eight-year-old yellow belt Evan Hynes earned a silver medal and nine-year-old white belt Maxwell Snow earned a bronze, both in kata.
Ten-year-old green belt Chris Foley medaled in 5th place in kata. 7-year-old yellow belt Edward Quilty and 7-year-old yellow belt Rowan Foley rounded out the team, competing against some of the best in North America.
The Quebec Open is one of the largest karate tournaments on the continent, with some 1200 participants from across Canada, the US and Mexico.
