Phase two of the automated garbage collection program in St. John’s will begin next month.
All areas that are eligible for automated garbage collection will have their carts delivered sometime in May. Once you get your new cart you will be required to start using it immediately. The city also recommends putting your house number on the cart so that it can be returned if stolen or lost.
Ian Froude, the Council Lead on Public Works, says the first phase of the program has been a success. Froude says the city has seen about a 40 per cent increase in recycling from areas currently with the bins, resulting in a cleaner city. Feedback from residents indicates the amount of litter has decreased because rodents and birds cannot access the trash.
