Abortion Support Services Atlantic recently gave a two-day workshop in St. John’s on how to become an abortion doula.
The training was brought to the province by Emma Duke, the Mindful Doula postpartum support services.
An abortion doula provides non-medical support the woman before, during and after. That could include transportation, lodging or just having someone to talk with.
There is no fee for service as people who work as abortion doulas do so as volunteers. Training can be done through several means including the workshops in St. John’s which were run by their coordinator in Halifax.
Duke says there is significant interest in doing the training but there’s still a lot of room to grow.
