Nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated from the area of High Level—a Northern Alberta town—as a wildfire rages just south of its borders.
The Town of High Level, about 400 kilometres northwest of Fort McMurray, issued an evacuation order yesterday, successfully evacuating by 10 p.m.
As of this morning, the Town says there is no immediate threat to High Level from the fire, and officials are continuing to work to ensure the community is safe, and that power is restored to the area.
In an update, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says the wildfire is about five kilometres away from High Level. Firefighters and resources from British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia will arrive over the next 48 hours to join the effort to battle the flames.
As it stands, Premier Kenney says no buildings have sustained damage from the fire.
