Two local tour guides are preparing to bring the story of Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown to life in St. John’s.
The British aviators made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919. They flew a modified First World War bomber from St. John’s to Ireland.
Acting as the pair, Michael Boyle and Jed Butt will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the historic flight through their tour called “Walking on Air.” It will include touring around Lester’s Field, the area where the flight took off, and several other relevant locations.
One of the stops on the walking tour is at a small street across from St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital named after the Alcock and Brown called Albro Lane.
The tour, Boyle says, will be a walking skit showcasing the interesting facts relating the story to the province.
Boyle says it is important for local people to know this story. He says it is an amazing story that took place right here in St. John’s.
Boyle believes the province is not on board with the story as much as Ireland is.
The tours will be offered on May 26 and June ninth through Boyle Tours.
