The idea of amalgamation in Labrador West is dead.
It was the second time that the two towns in the region toyed with the idea, but last night Wabush Town Council said no. Neighbouring Labrador City sees things the other way, and wishes to join forces with Wabush.
Lab City Mayor Wayne Button resigned earlier this week.
Wabush Mayor Ron Barron told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that about 60 per cent of their residents who turned up for two consultation sessions were against amalgamation.
Given those numbers, the town decided not to approach the issue through a plebiscite but go straight to a council meeting. Last night, council voted against becoming one town.
Barron says if there had been any interest in Wabush for amalgamation, people would have turned out for the meetings in droves.
