Forensic Psychiatrist Dr. Nizer Ladha says 21-year-old Graham Veitch didn’t appreciate his actions or consequences when he killed his mother’s partner with a hammer.
Ladha concluded testimony today at Veitch’s Supreme Court trial in St. John’s.
Dr. Ladha says Graham Veitch likely knew what he was doing when he was striking David Collins with a hammer. Ladha says what Veitch did not appreciate were the consequences.
Ladha provided his expert opinion at trial for the defence, who are working to prove Veitch is not criminally responsible for the murder.
The psychiatrist says it’s his opinion Veitch began to suffer from psychosis in the spring of the year, and that psychosis continued up to, including, and after the murder.
When the judge asked Ladha if he felt Veitch was not criminally responsible for all charges before the court—including flight from police—the doctor said Veitch would not have acted this way if he were not mentally ill.
Trial resumes tomorrow morning.
The trial of Graham Veitch returns to court 9am tomorrow morning.
