The running community is mourning the loss of a young man who died while participating in the Ottawa Marathon on the weekend.
Steve Trickett was originally from Riverhead, Harbour Grace.
Fellow Newfoundlander Tim Powers also ran in the race, but had to bow out at the 29k mark due to a leg injury. He offered his condolences to Trickett’s family.
Some Ottawa media are calling the Ottawa Marathon “dangerous” after a number of people encountered difficulties during the race.
Powers says the humidity made things more challenging for participants, but despite that, the race is one of the best organized that he’s ever seen.
He says a high premium was placed on athlete safety and wellness, and a good job was done helping runners who were struggling.
