Crews from the Whitbourne Forestry Department, Colliers and Conception Bay Fire Departments, and a provincial water bomber responded to the scene of a forest fire near Colliers this afternoon.
Thick clouds of smoke filled the air as crews worked to subdue the blaze. A provincial water bomber made a series of runs throughout the afternoon to contain the flames.

The fire is in the area of Nine Island Pond, which is home to a number of cabins. Crews indicate that the fire has been brought under control.
As of this afternoon, the fire reached an estimated size of six hectares.
Meanwhile, two water bombers were deployed to another forest fire listed in St. Lawrence.
Since the start of May, 48 fires have been recorded in Newfoundland and Labrador. The season runs from May 1 to September 30.
