A local birdwatcher hit the road to Stephenville searching for a rare bird that was sighted yesterday morning.
The painted bunting finch is a small bird that looks as if it was painted with a brush, says Bruce Mactavish.
After receiving word of the sighting, Mactavish got ready for a road trip from St. John’s to Stephenville.
The bird is regularly seen in Florida, Mexico, Arizona and some Caribbean islands.
Mactavish says there are two reasons why the painted bunting finch is special in Newfoundland: It is rare, and a unique sighting.
