Just one month into forest fire season and the province has seen 50 burning over 80 hectares.
The most recent ones broke out yesterday afternoon in Colliers and St. Lawrence. Both provincial and municipal fire crews were called in to tackle the two forest fires.
During the forest fire season, a Permit to Burn is required when lighting outdoor fires within 300 metres of forest land. A permit can be picked up at no cost at any local forest management office.
On average there are more than 160 wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador every year. Fire fighters are most successful when fires are detected and reported while they are still small.
The season started on May 1 and will continue until September 30 for the island portion but runs from May 15 to September 30 in Labrador.
