A new report from the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization shows that for the first time since 2015, the number of adult Atlantic salmon returning to North American rivers has increased over the previous year.
Most of those gains were attributable to a rebound in small salmon returning to Newfoundland and Labrador rivers.
Large salmon returns throughout North America, however, dropped again last year.
Atlantic Salmon Federation President Bill Taylor says no two places in North America are the same when it comes to wild salmon. The overall harvest last year was at a low, in part because of conservation measures put in place in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec.
